چکیده

The management of public forested lands is a difficult and time-consuming endeavor. Forest resource managers often make decisions at fine spatial and temporal scales. While this is useful, it is equally important to understand and make decisions regarding landscape level phenomena at broad temporal scales. Key questions managers should be asking such as “how will vegetation respond to disturbances at large spatial extents?” and “how will forest landscape pattern affect successional dynamics?” are often overshadowed due to the time and cost involved at conducting research across broad spatial scales. Answering these requires a synthesis of scientific knowledge about landscape components and species life cycle processes integrated into a cost-effective and time efficient system that is useful to resource managers.

Landscape Modeling for Forest Restoration: Concepts and Applications

Abstract-Restoration planning, evaluation, and implementation are of paramount importance in many areas where the magnitude of the abiotic and biotic disturbance agents has altered the resources and conditions of forest landscapes. However, the effect of restoration practices is difficult to measure, and in many areas the restoration goals are yet less clear. Landscape modeling provides useful ...

Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis (Zimmerman) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) (SPB), is an indigenous invasive species that infests and causes mortality to pines (Pinus spp.) throughout the Southern United States. The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Homoptera: Adelgidae) (HWA), is a nonindigenous invasive species that infests and causes mortality to Easte...

Forecasting landscape-scale, cumulative effects of forest management on vegetation and wildlife habitat: A case study of issues, limitations, and opportunities

Forest landscape disturbance and succession models have become practical tools for large-scale, long-term analyses of the cumulative effects of forest management on real landscapes. They can provide essential information in a spatial context to address management and policy issues related to forest planning, wildlife habitat quality, timber harvesting, fire effects, and land use change. Widespr...

The place of AHP method among Multi Criteria Decision Making methods in forest management

As the name implies, Multi Criteria Decision Making Methods (MCDMs) is a decision making tool that capable the selection of the most preferred choice in a context where several criteria apply simultaneously.  Primary purpose of this study is to examine the status of Multi Criteria Decision Making Methods (MCDMs) in forest management. The study also aims to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses ...

A Simulation Study of Forest Dynamics Under Multiple Harvest Regimes and Wind Disturbances in Southern Mississippi

Forests of the coastal plain region of the southern United States are unique in their productivity, biodiversity, and economic value. However, natural and anthropogenic disturbances may trigger forest age structure and spatial distribution variation. Detecting and predicting tree species distribution patterns can help to understand the dynamics of disturbances in order to develop adequate fores...
